Concord Faces Review Bombing Amid Struggles to Build Audience
PlayStation’s latest live-service first-person shooter, Concord, has found itself in hot water as it faces significant review bombing on Metacritic. The game, which has struggled to gain a foothold in the competitive gaming market, is now seeing its user rating plummet due to a barrage of extremely low scores.

A Rocky Start for Concord

From the moment Concord was announced, it faced skepticism and criticism. The game’s hero shooter mechanics and unconventional character designs were not well-received, leading to a lukewarm reception even before its official release. When Concord finally debuted, the numbers were underwhelming. On Steam, the game peaked at just 697 players during its opening weekend, a stark contrast to the numbers typically seen with successful live-service games. As of now, the player base has dwindled to around 152 players on Steam, and while PlayStation 5 numbers aren’t publicly available, it’s unlikely that they are significantly better.

Review Bombing Hits Metacritic

Adding to Concord’s woes is a recent wave of review bombing on Metacritic. The game’s user rating has been dragged down to a dismal 2.2, making it one of the lowest-rated games on the platform. Many of these negative reviews seem less focused on the gameplay itself and more on perceived political and social agendas within the game. Some users have criticized the game for alleged “leftist propaganda” and the inclusion of pronouns for its characters. It’s likely that many of these reviews are being submitted by individuals who haven’t played the game but are targeting it based on ideological grounds.

Contrasting Reception on Steam

Interestingly, the situation on Steam tells a different story. Despite the low player count, those who have played Concord on Steam have given it a Mostly Positive rating. This contrast suggests that while the game may not have captured a large audience, those who are playing it generally enjoy the core mechanics and gameplay experience.

Critical Perspective

In a detailed review of Concord, the game was praised for its solid mechanics and visually impressive graphics. The combination of classic arena shooter elements with a diverse range of character abilities offered a fun and engaging experience. However, the review also highlighted some significant flaws, particularly in the game’s character design and monetization strategy. Unlike many of its competitors in the hero shooter space, Concord is a premium game priced at $40, a factor that could be contributing to its struggles in attracting players, especially when most rival games are free-to-play.

The Road Ahead for Concord

To survive in the fiercely competitive market of live-service games, Concord may need to rethink its strategy. Moving to a free-to-play model could help attract more players and build a larger community, a move that many believe is necessary for the game’s long-term success.

Final Thoughts

While Concord shows promise with its gameplay mechanics, the game’s early struggles and the ongoing review bombing have put it in a precarious position. Whether it can recover and find its audience remains to be seen, but for now, Concord faces an uphill battle.
