Gothic 2, an iconic role-playing game that played a pivotal role in inspiring CD Projekt Red's The Witcher series, has made a grand entry onto the Nintendo Switch platform. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, this marks a significant milestone in the game's history.

The Journey to Switch

Originally released in 2002 in Germany, Gothic 2's English version surfaced in the market in the latter half of 2003. Despite a lukewarm reception in the West, it gained immense popularity in Poland, profoundly influencing the development of The Witcher series by Warsaw-based CD Projekt Red. More than two decades later, THQ Nordic brings this beloved RPG to the Switch, offering fans both new and old a chance to experience the game's magic.

This addition introduces several hours of new content, enhancing the overall gaming experience. It's a fitting celebration of the game's legacy, offering a comprehensive package for both seasoned players and newcomers.

Availability and Pricing

The game is available in both digital and physical formats. The digital version can be purchased from the Nintendo eShop for $29.99, with buyers receiving up to 120 My Nintendo Gold Points. Meanwhile, the physical version, retailing at €29.99 ($33), is exclusive to the European THQ Nordic Store but offers international shipping. Additionally, a limited-edition Exclusive Set, priced at €44.99 ($49), features a tri-fold wallet with The Sleeper from the first Gothic, adding a collectible aspect for fans.

The Development Behind the Port

The Switch port of Gothic 2 was handled by Elverils, a Saint Petersburg-based studio known for its work on ports of several Piranha Bytes and Larian Studios titles. Barcelona-based Alkimia Interactive, currently working on the Gothic remake, was credited as a secondary developer for this project.

Future of the Gothic Series

While the first two Gothic games have found a new home on the Switch, there is no current indication that Gothic 3 will follow suit. However, Alkimia Interactive's Gothic remake is targeting a 2024 release, although it won't be available on the Switch.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

The launch of Gothic 2 Complete Classic on the Nintendo Switch is not just a celebration of an iconic game's legacy; it's a testament to the enduring appeal of classic RPGs. This release bridges the gap between old-school gaming enthusiasts and the modern gaming community, offering an opportunity to explore a world that has inspired one of the most successful RPG franchises in recent history.
