Performance Comparison: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Runs Faster on PC than PS5
Upon its release, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart garnered attention for its seemingly superior performance on the PS5, particularly when it came to loading the game's portal scene. However, new findings suggest that high-end PCs can outperform the PS5, even without the utilization of DirectStorage technology. In this article, we will delve into these findings, explain the methods of testing, and discuss the implications for both console and PC gaming.

The Testing Method: A Look into Compusemble's Approach

Compusemble conducted the tests using an AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, supported by 32GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT graphics card. By removing a single file named "cache.pso" from the game's directory, they managed to boost the loading time of the portal scene, thereby surpassing the PS5's performance.

Furthermore, they disabled DirectStorage to examine the game's performance without this specific technology. Intriguingly, the PC still loaded the portal scene faster than the PS5, debunking any notions of specialized PS5 hardware making a significant difference in this aspect.

Debunking the Myth: PS5's Hardware Decompression

Initially, claims were made that the PS5's dedicated hardware decompression technology provided it an edge over high-end PCs, especially in running the portal scene in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. However, the tests conducted by Compusemble disprove this assumption. As it turns out, the PS5's hardware decompression does not offer any considerable advantages over high-end PC systems.

The Role of DirectStorage: Not a Game-Changer for High-End PCs

DirectStorage is designed to improve loading times by efficiently utilizing GPU decompression. However, current high-end PCs do not benefit much from this technology. As the tests showed, even without DirectStorage, high-end PCs were able to outperform the PS5 in loading the portal scene.

What this suggests is that most high-end CPUs are powerful enough to manage the task without the need for DirectStorage's GPU decompression. This finding has been confirmed not just in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart but also in other games like Forspoken.

DirectStorage’s Utility for Mid-Tier and Low-Tier PCs

While DirectStorage may not dramatically boost performance for high-end systems, it could offer benefits for mid-tier and low-tier PCs. By utilizing GPU decompression, these systems could achieve better performance and quicker loading times. Therefore, developers should consider implementing an in-game setting that allows players to choose between CPU and GPU decompression, depending on their hardware.

Conclusion

The initial belief that the PS5 could outperform high-end PCs, particularly in loading Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s portal scene, has been disproven. High-end PCs, even without DirectStorage, can achieve better performance. The test results emphasize that dedicated hardware decompression on the PS5 does not yield significant benefits over high-end PCs. Moreover, while DirectStorage may not be crucial for high-end systems, its utility should not be disregarded for mid-tier and low-tier PCs. Therefore, it is important to approach performance comparisons with factual evidence rather than assumptions.
